Surface treatment of carbon steel tubes requires various processes such as degreasing, pickling, activation, phosphatising, neutralising and soaping. All of these processes have to be run at very specific and typically rather high temperatures, resulting in considerable evaporation loss and - depending on the pickling agent - toxic emissions from the acid tanks.
In traditional, open plants the consequences are extremely high energy consumption, corrosion on cranes, buildings and stored material. Workplace safety is a major problem, since threshold limit values (TLV) cannot be guaranteed even when employing suction systems on the lateral sides of the tanks.
The automatic crane and other sensitive plant equipment such as pumps and sensors are protected from vapour and acidic fumes. Thus, it is possible to employ the best available instrumentation and an automatic handling system and to run a fully automated pre-treatment plant. During regular operation, no personnel work inside the encapsulated pickling area.
